Tuesday, January 27, 2004 There's no day like a snow day
11:22 PM
Well...Okay...So of course GV didn't have a FULL snow day and in the end it didn't really affect me all the much...But still. Something about the KNOWLEDGE of having a snow day makes any day seem all the more enjoyable.
I accomplished much in the catching up of school work and more importantly, I've been able to delve into the latest book in a trilogy by Garth Nix. I'm almost positive that I've discussed this series at least briefly before. In fact, I see it right now as a scroll through the past. I was on the second chapter at the beginning of the day and now I'm nearly halfway through. The Abhorsen, the third of the trilogy I like to refer to as the "Old Kingdom Trilogy" is by far the best. If any of you reading this enjoy good fantasy books, these are awesome. The read quickly and easily, and are actually listed most commonly in the young adult section rather than fantasy. That's always struck me as odd, seeing as how I believe ANYONE could truly enjoy this book thus landing it in the "Science Fiction" section (I say science fiction because almost any bookstore I go to doesn't really have a fantasy section. They just include those books amongst the Sci Fi). In any case, the characters are extremely well developed, they're mostly our age, around 19, and they all are experiencing something totally surreal and yet completely realistic at the same time. Well, at least, Nix makes it appear that way. If they don't make these books into a movie someday I will be very sad. In fact, in some ways, I'm tempted to switch my major to film and video/theater, become a director or producer, and demand that Nix give me the opportunity to create his books into a film masterpiece. But of course, I'm not quite THAT crazy...So the vision of the Old Kingdom Movie Trilogy will have to remain a vision until it becomes someone else's reality.
I have also, today, accomplished my first entire read-through of the New Testament. I know for some of you out there that's like, "Whoa. Just your first time through? And you're 19??" I guess I just never really felt pushed to read the Bible as a Catholic. We had those nice little Misselette's (sp?) at mass every Sunday with the readings right there...So it just seemed pointless to really read the Bible. You get so much out of it though...So much knowledge and understanding. Church becomes so much more enjoyable each time you go because now you know what passages and verses they're talking about. You know and you understand everything that's going on. Plus you know GOD so much more. I'm starting on my second reading of the New Testament now and I know that God's going to reveal so much more to me that I missed the first time through. That's exciting. Plus, I can then read the Old Testament and understand the New Testament even more through that. There's just so much for me to learn through God's Word that I can't believe I went without reading it before. Well, actually I can. I can now see why so many Christian's falter in their walk. It's because they DON'T know God's word. Although I guess in some cases, you can know God's word in and out and either you're totally unmoved by it or you just reach a point in your life where it's just seems easier to be lazy and not follow it. Everyone slips now and then, but I've just noticed some people out there who seem to know it inside and out but simply CHOOSE not to follow it. Those people don't frighten me or make me upset. They're just people who need more of my prayers. I can definitely tell now that this is turning into a random garble of my consciousness so...I will end it here.
